Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Upgrades to equipment grant a bonus on the item's stats. This bonus is based on the upgrade component level and rarity.
Components
Upgrade components are the parts that can make your weapons and armor better. item upgrade can find them by destroying enemies, purchasing them from karma sellers or finding them in item-spheres. You can also use the workbench for selecting an upgrade template. In either scenario the item will be upgraded when enough upgrade components are gathered.
Each component has its own experience multiplier that affects how much more experience an item will gain when it is upgraded by the component. For instance, organic components have a more experience multipliers than mechanical ones. It is recommended to upgrade the organic components first, until you reach the next level in the weapon or equipment, then switch to mechanical upgrades.
Each item comes with a maximum upgrade number that is available for. The number of upgrades is determined by the upgradeable rank and the type of upgrade for the upgradeable item. For instance, the most expensive possible upgrade for a weapon is a weapon of tier 10. The most popular weapon upgrade is a tier 6 gun and an armor upgrade of tier 5.
Sets
A set is a collection of objects which all have the same bonus. Each item in the set can be upgraded at least once, and each upgrade boosts the guaranteed bonuses. The first time you upgrade an item or set piece will give it a +1 increase to its primary stat. In subsequent upgrades the stats of the primary one will be boosted a bit more (for example, +1 to 12+/13+/14+), and each time you upgrade the item, one of its extra stats is increased randomly.
